Air Products, which provided technologies for the first six NLNG trains, has recently inked a contract for the seventh train. One complete LNG train and one combined liquefaction unit are part of the project.
The new project for the seventh production unit should increase NLNG’s current capacity by about 35%, from 22 million tonnes per annum (mpta) to 30 mpta.
The project’s Final Investment Decision (FID) was approved in December 2019, and Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracts with the SCD JV Consortium, which includes Saipem, Chiyoda, and Daewoo, were signed in May 2020. On the 15th of June 2021, the firm began construction on the Train 7 project.
For both liquefaction units, Air Products will provide the major cryogenic heat exchangers (MCHEs) as well as the process technology. It would provide this technology and patented procedures to a joint venture in Nigeria that will produce eight million tonnes of LNG per year.
The LNG heat exchangers will be delivered in 2023 by Air Products’ Port Manatee manufacturing site.
The first LNG production unit of the Nigerian LNG (NLNG) project on Bonny Island entered commercial operation in 1999. Furthermore, Train 6 has been in service since 2007. Today, all six LNG trains are in operation.
