The 41st Ministerial Session of the African Petroleum Producers’ Organization (APPO) was held via videoconference this Tuesday, December 14, 2021.

In the session chaired by the Minister of Mines and Energy of the Republic of Algeria, His Excellency Mohamed Arkab, who is the current President of the Organization, the issue of the Future of the Oil and Gas Industry in Africa in the light of the global quest for energy transition was on the agenda of the Ministerial discussions.

The ministers unanimously took the resolution to pursue the exploitation of the huge oil and gas resources of its Member Countries for the economic emancipation of its people while also exploring the use of renewable energies. They noted that this ‘aggressive drive for Energy Transition’ comes when Africa is launching into industrialisation that requires a lot of energy. They expressed concern over the halt of financing for oil and gas projects globally but expressed confidence that Africa will be fine as funding can be generated internally.

They also acknowledged the reality of climate change and expressed support for efforts to tackle the danger.

In attendance were Heads of Delegation of the 14 member-countries, including Algeria, Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, DR Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Libya, Niger, Nigeria and South Africa; and other delegates, including the Senegalese Minister of Petroleum and Energies, Aishatou Sophie Galadima, the Ghanaian Deputy Minister of Energy, Mohamed Amin Adam, the ES of Africa Energy Commission of the African Union, Rashid Ali Abdalla and the Chairman of the Africa Energy Chamber, NJ Ayuk.

The Council welcomed five new Ministers, which are:

  1. H.E Bruno Jean-Richard Itoua of Congo
  2. H.E Budimbu Ntubuanga Didier of DR Congo
  3. H.E Thomas Camara of Cote d’Ivoire
  4. H.E Mohamed Oun of Libya, and
  5. H.E Mahammane Sani Mahammadou of Niger

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Angola, H.E Diamantino Pedro Azevedo, was unanimously elected as the APPO President for the year 2022, while the Minister of Water and Mines of Benin, Samou Seidou Adambi, was elected as the Vice President. The Executive Board Member for Benin, Celestin Enanto, and the Executive Board Member for Cameroon, Jean Jacques Koum, were also approved as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Executive Board for 2022.

The next Ordinary Session of the Ministerial Council will be in Angola during the last quarter of 2022, with the exact date to be communicated later by the host country.
