Elecnor withdraws from the Boulenouar wind power project in Western Mauritania. This is a win for German energy company, Siemens, who formed a consortium with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, a wind energy specialist based in Spain.
The Spanish electrician is yet to state the reasons for its withdrawal from the project. The Boulenouar wind power project is to build the largest clean energy production facility in Mauritania. The energy company is withdrawing after helping to set up the consortium responsible for the development of the clean energy project.
Elecnor’s shares in the project were purchased by Siemens, which remains in consortium with its partner, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, a company based in Zamudio, Spain.
The benefits of the 140 million euros projects are still awaited in the country. The project is expected to add 100 megawatts in the national electricity grid of Mauritania. The project promoters have already received an investment promise of 120 million euros from a financial institution that is part of the Arab League the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD).
It still remains unknown the actual reason for the Spanish firm’s withdrawal but sources are linking it to a statement in one of the company’s recent release that says it wants to concentrate on its wind energy production activities in Latin America. An official press statement from Elecnor is expected to give details about the actual reason for the exit.
