Eni, a major Oil and Gas Company in Italy, and the national energy company of Algeria, Sonatrach, have struck agreements to speed up emissions reduction and increase energy security. The companies would work together to find ways to cut back on methane and greenhouse gas emissions.
Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni, and Toufik Hakkar, CEO of Sonatrach, signed the contracts earlier this week in Algiers. The two agreements, which were signed in the presence of the presidents of Italy and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Giorgia Meloni and Abdelmadjid Tebboune, describe future cooperation initiatives on energy supply, energy transition, and decarbonization.
Commenting, Eni’s CEO, Claudio Descalzi, said: “These agreements bear witness to our commitment to ensuring Italy’s security of supply while at the same time pursuing our decarbonization objectives. The partnership between Italy and Algeria gets stronger today, and Algeria’s key role as one of Europe’s main energy suppliers is confirmed.”
To maintain energy security while also advancing a sustainable energy transition, the agreements will outline energy efficiency programmes, renewable energy advances, green hydrogen projects, and carbon dioxide capture and storage activities.
Since 1981, Eni has operated in Algeria. Eni is the main IOC in the country, producing 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day on an equity basis.
