TechnipFMC has been awarded the over $1 billion contract with Assiut National Oil Processing Co. (ANOPC) for a hydrocracking complex for the Assiut refinery in Egypt.

The contract is an engineering, procurement and construction contract. It is to aid the transformation of lower-value petroleum products into about 2.8 million tons of cleaner products.

TechnipFMC is expected to build new processing units which will include a vacuum distillation unit, a diesel hydrocracking unit, a delayed coker unit, a distillate hydrotreating unit and a hydrogen production facility unit using the company’s steam reforming proprietary technology.

Works are already in the pipeline between both companies to fulfil all outstanding prerequisites and to commence the project.

Commenting on the development, the president of Technip Energies, Catherine Mac Gregor said, “This award demonstrates Technip FMC’s long-standing relationship with the Egyptian petroleum sector and strengthens our expertise in the delivery of complex projects in the country.”

“It comes after successful execution of the Feed, reflecting our selective approach and the importance of being involved at a very early stage of any development. Assiut is considered one of the major strategic projects needed to meet growing local demand for cleaner products, and we are extremely honored to have been selected by ANOPC to contribute to the largest refining project to be implemented in Upper Egypt.”

The hydrocracker is said to be worth $2.5 billion and will upgrade residual oil from the 90,000 Barrel of Oil Per Day Assiut Refinery, in Assuit, upper southern Egypt.
