The Managing Director of Total Exploration and Production Angola (TEPA) has revealed the French Major’s short, medium and long-term plans for its operations in Angola.

In an interview with Africa Oil & Power on Monday, 17th August 2020, Oliver Jouny said the country’s leading oil producer, Total, is not spared of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic that has caused harm to the world economy.

Blocks 17 and 32 produced more than 600, 000 barrels of oil per day between March and May. The company is currently ramping-up activities offshore and will restart drilling wells, perform seismic acquisitions and non-routine production and maintenance operations on both blocks by the end of August.

He said the firm is still pursuing sanctioned projects like Zinia Phase 2 and Clov Phase 2 on Block 17 or Caril Pop-Up and Mostarda East on Block 32. The Skyros rig is already on Block 32 and the Maersk Voyager will be restarted by the end of the month.

On the revised timeline for development of short-cycle projects, he said TEPA is deferring exploration wells initially planned in 2020-21 to give priority to development wells and to accelerate oil production. He said in addition to Blocks 17 and 32 and infill projects, to offset declining production, the company is studying developments on Begonia (Block 17/06) and Chissonga (B16) fields. Both fields including the development of Cameia and Golfinho in Blocks 20 and 21 will sustain the company’s operations for the mid-term.

On the firm’s short, medium and lon-term goal for Angola, he said, “Short-term, TEPA is restarting its non-essential activities to maintain production and deliver its short-cycle projects. Thus, after remobilizing Skyros rig, we will also restart West Gemini and Maersk Voyager in the coming weeks, in a logistical environment still highly impacted by COVID-19. Mid-term, TEPA is pursuing the development of its sanctioned projects and the drilling of its exploration wells. Finally, TEPA is working in the longer term to keep its leader position in the country.”

Total will be the first operator to resume operation in Angola.
