A refinery status report from the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has shown that forty (40) oil firms possess dormant refinery licenses as at May 2021. The report showed that sixty-eight (68) refinery license and approval had been granted and 40 of them are inactive.
A breakdown of the report groups the license and approval into different categories which includes eight (8) License to Establish (LTE), twenty-five (25) not active License to Establish (LTE), nineteen (19) Approval to Construct/Relocation (ATC/R), fifteen (15) not active ATC/R and one (1) License to Operate active license/approval.
Considering that Nigeria’s state-owned refineries, according to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), did not refine crude oil from July 2019 to January 2021, this is a blow to Nigeria’s hopes of its refining capacity growing by 1,862,000 barrels per day (bpd).
