Japan Sends Another Disaster Relief Team to Mauritius Oil Spill Site

This is the third disaster relief team to be sent to Mauritius from Japan... The team is to undertake on-site environmental assistance activities in the country.

An Expert Team of 6 members is set to depart Japan for the Republic of Mauritius to help deal with the oil spill from the WAKASHIO ship that has been stranded off the coast of Mauritius since July 25th.

This is part of Japan’s effort in assisting the Republic of Mauritius in every possible way they can. This is the third disaster relief team to be sent to Mauritius from Japan. The team is to undertake on-site environmental assistance activities in the country.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, “Japan has decided to dispatch the team out of comprehensive and holistic consideration of all circumstances.”

The Ministry’s release highlighted these two points:

  1. The accident has caused serious damage to the environment in the Republic of Mauritius, which could have a serious impact on the country’s tourism industry as well. Japan has decided to dispatch the team out of comprehensive and holistic consideration of all circumstances, including the request of assistance from the Government of the Republic of Mauritius and the friendly relationship between the two countries.
  2. Japan will continue to closely cooperate with the Government of the Republic of Mauritius as well as relevant countries and organizations, and make utmost efforts to contribute to the restoration of natural environment and the recovery of economic activities of the Republic of Mauritius.”

Last month, the Prime Minister of Mauritius announced almost all oil from the leaking Japanese ship has been removed.
