Patrick Pouyanne, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, this week did a two-nation trip to Rwanda and Mozambique, where he spoke with the presidents of both countries in preparation for the company’s return to Cabo Delgado. The company is setting the path for a return to the gas-rich region of Mozambique after declaring force majeure on its Mozambique Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project in April 2021.
TotalEnergies Chairperson and CEO Patrick Pouyanne met with H.E. Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, to discuss the company’s return to Mozambique, as well as sign a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen TotalEnergies penetration in Rwanda’s energy sector.
Pouyanne said: “This collaboration agreement illustrates TotalEnergies’ commitment to deploying its multi-energy strategy in Africa, particularly in Rwanda, a country with a booming economy.”
Pouyanne will also travel to Maputo to meet with the President of Mozambique, H.E. Filipe Nyusi, to discuss the practicalities of the company’s return to the country. Furthermore, the two parties are anticipated to define Rwanda’s position in the $20 billion LNG project, as the country has supplied military support to Mozambique in the aftermath of the conflict in Cabo Delgado’s northern province.
TotalEnergies’ return to Mozambique will be crucial for the country as well as the region. The LNG project is one of Africa’s largest gas initiatives, ushering in a new age of clean energy development for the continent.
