The Coral-Sul Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) vessel has arrived at Area 4 in the Rovuma Basin, offshore Mozambique, led by the Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV). The project is the country’s first of its kind, as well as the world’s first ultra-deepwater FLNG, with a depth of 2,000 metres.

The Coral-Sul FLNG vessel, which has a capacity of 3.4 million tonnes of Liquefied Natural Gas per year, is set to begin production in the second half of 2022 from the Coral offshore field, which has approximately 16 trillion cubic feet of gas in place.

The project is estimated to generate $19.3 billion in revenue for the Mozambican state over its 25-year lifespan while also addressing global natural gas demand and enhancing domestic gas availability in Mozambique.

Aside from generating cash, the project will aid in the implementation of other projects across the country, resulting in increased socioeconomic benefits such as job generation. Approximately 800 jobs have already been created locally because of the project, with an additional 350 expected to be available at the start of production and during the project’s duration.

Speaking at the naming and sail away ceremony last November, the Director of Development, Operations and Energy Efficiency, Eni, Stefao Maoine, said: “The Coral Sul FLNG Project is a world-class achievement in engineering, construction know-how, and technology, suited to kickstart the development of Mozambique’s world-class resources.”

Eni, the biggest shareholder in the MRV and the discoverer of the Coral offshore field, will lead the ground-breaking project.
