Zimbabwe and Mozambique have entered into a partnership to extract and refine natural gas in the Buzi and Temani regions of Mozambique’s Manica Province, near the Zimbabwean border. The agreement also covers the conversion of natural gas into products, including gasoline, fuel, fertiliser, and other chemicals.
During his visit to Mozambique, Zimbabwean President H.E. Emmerson Mnangagwa met with Mozambican President H.E. Filipe Nyusi to discuss the deal in detail. Zimbabwe’s electricity import costs might be drastically reduced if the deal is successful.
Commenting, Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique, Victor Matemadanda, said: “In this agreement, we will co-own gas fields and we will do the extraction together as partners, meaning there is potential to reduce our import bill on gas products.”
He added that the deal will strengthen ties between Zimbabwe and Mozambique, and simultaneously contribute to the economic development of both countries.
MOZAMBICAN GAS
Since the discovery of a vast quantity of natural gas off the coast of northern Mozambique in 2010 and the commencement of the Mozambique LNG Project, the government of the country has continually made significant progress in ensuring that before the end of the current decade, it becomes one of the most important players in the African and global gas industry.
