Distributed Power Africa (DPA) Zimbabwe, through the undertaking of solar projects for commercial and industrial businesses, is working on a 120 megawatts (MW) solar project in Zimbabwe, with about 30MW already installed or at an advanced stage of deployment.

The Chief Executive of DPA Zimbabwe, Divyajeet Mahajan said solar energy has the potential to reduce the country’s dependency on energy imports from neighbouring countries and increase the local power supply. He noted the Power company will step up efforts in its deployment of commercial solar projects to improve energy delivery.

The company recently announced their largest project so far, the on-going construction of a 1.8MW plant in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe, which will be completed by August. The efforts made in providing an alternate source of energy was recognised by the Minister for Finance and Economic Development, Mthuli Ncube, in his National Budget Statement for 2020.

The Chief Executive appreciated the government’s recognition of its contribution to the energy security of the nation. He said, “We appreciate government’s efforts in facilitating a legislative and regulatory framework that enables us to contribute in the power sector.”

The company will also be engaging the local market by engaging local suppliers for technical support in the installation of their projects. To this end, there is an on-going selective bidding process to identify and work with more suppliers in the country.

There has already been remarkable progress on this as the company’s Willowvale project was in partnership with a local vendor and saw the engagement over 60 skilled technicians on the construction of the project.

He added, “Our initiatives also encourage growth throughout the country’s supply chain, from manufacturers of solar system accessories, built structures, all the way to smart energy ICT technology.”

DPA is a pan-African energy company with a presence in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya. Other projects the company has already constructed this year are for Total, Delta, UNESCO, Stanbic, Schweppes Beitbridge, Luxaflor Rose Farm, St Gobain and a host of others.
