Nigeria’s Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Authority (PPPRA), on Tuesday, 19th January 2020, announced that the consumption of Liquefied Petroleum Gas in the country exceeded one million metric tonnes (MT) in 2020.

The feat was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of the Authority, Abdulkadir Saidu, who noted that this is the first time in history that LPG consumption in Nigeria reached the one million MT threshold. The consumption for 2019 was 840,594.37, which was an increase of over 60.5% from the 635,452.061 MT recorded in 2018.

The steady and sustained pattern of growth places Nigeria at the first position in West Africa, and as one of the leading LPG consuming nations in Africa.

The efforts of the Nigerian government to increase LPG consumption in the country is to create a healthier life for Nigerians and provide access to a cleaner source of energy for cooking, vehicular transportation and other domestic uses.

He said the utilisation milestone shows the progress that has been made in providing alternative sources of fuelling to Nigerians aside from the traditional Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Dual-Purpose Kerosene (DPK), and altering the country’s energy mix.

In his words, “With this laudable feat, the country is on track to meet the 5million MT by 2022 target, set in the Nigeria Gas Policy (NGP) of 2017, which translates to an average of 1million MT/year, provided we collectively sustain and ramp up intervention efforts and initiatives of the government and all stakeholders.”

Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited, has also increased its allocation of LPG to the domestic market from 350,000 MT to 450,000 MT in 2021 to support the remarkable feat.
