The Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker, has signed an agreement of intentions with the Chief Executive Officer of the German company, Siemens, Joe Kaiser, to commence discussions and studies to implement a pilot project for the production of green hydrogen in Egypt.
The agreement is the first step towards expanding the field to the possibility of exporting. According to the Ministry, the signature is within the framework of implementing the country’s strategy that aims to expand the fields of clean green energy. It will increase the contribution of renewable energy in the electric energy mix, the attention paid by the electricity and renewable energy sector to diversify sources of electric energy production, and benefit from the wealth of Natural Egypt, especially new and renewable energy sources.
In a statement, the Ministry said that among new and renewable energy sources is the production, use and export of green hydrogen, in line with the global trend in this field. Green hydrogen is receiving great attention as it is a promising source of energy soon.
A ministerial committee is currently working at the national level to study hydrogen as an energy source soon in Egypt, and to research all possible alternatives for the generation and use of hydrogen, taking into account international experiences in this field. The Egyptian Energy Strategy 2035 will be updated to include green hydrogen as an energy source.
