In its latest list of twenty (20) key oil wells to watch in 2021, oil data analysis firm, Westwood Global Energy Group (WGEG), mentioned two (2) African wells among the list of oil wells.

The African wells are Venus-1 located on the ultra-deep block 2913-B off Namibia and Ondjaba-1 well offshore block 48, off Angola. Both joint ventures are operated by French oil and gas giant, Total.

According to WGEG, these wells will have a significant impact on the sector at local, regional or international level. The wells are divided into four (4) categories. They are:

  • The wells that will test border basins.
  • The wells that will test new areas in already proven basins.
  • The wells that have massive potential, despite high exploration risks.
  • The wells that are important prospects, and will play a catalytic role in the event of success.

Venus-1 is classified in the first category. It is located in the ultra-deep Orange basin, sharing a border with South Africa. The Venus-1 of the Namibian block 2913-B is predicted to become the largest discovery in Africa for a decade, with 2 billion barrels of oil. It will also be the deepest well ever drilled in Africa.

Ondjaba-1 is classified in the third category, with a potential of 1.3 billion barrels of oil.  It is estimated that its borehole will reach 3,628 metres of water depth, which will make it the deepest well ever drilled in the history of the sector.

The Deputy Director of Block 48, Pedro Ribeiro said, in the event of a discovery, putting the site into production will require the development of equipment different from those used today, because we are at the limits of currently existing technologies.
