The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) announced that it will be exploring the future of blue hydrogen, digitalisation in the energy sector and cybersecurity and blockchain technology in its coming workshop.

The Organisation said the second workshop on energy and information technology (IT) will hold virtually on September 21st. Energy experts from OPEC member countries, other oil-producing and consuming countries, international bodies and leading global corporations will be invited to participate in the workshop.

According to a statement on the Organisation’s website, this year’s event will focus on issues such as the future of blue hydrogen, digitalisation in the energy sector and cybersecurity and blockchain technology.

The workshop is part of the Organisation’s research programme aimed at holding discussions and exchanging information on some of the key issues in the energy industry.

The Secretary-General of OPEC, Mohammad Barkindo, said the global oil and gas sector is keen on using the latest technologies to improve productivity. He said, “The energy industry, particularly the oil sector, has always been eager to utilise and develop the latest cutting-edge technologies to improve efficiency and effectiveness of its operations, along with its environmental credentials.”

“We at OPEC constantly review and analyse the latest technologies emerging in our industry and their impacts on the various sectors, including the supply chain. These technologies have changed us a lot, and we expect them to continue doing so in the future.”

OPEC prides itself as the umbrella body of 13 oil-exporting countries including Algeria, Angola, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the global oil and gas market, but it has not hindered OPEC from holding virtual meetings and finding ways to aid the recovery of the oil market and bring stability to oil prices globally. Part of these efforts is the historical cut decision reached (currently ongoing) by OPEC to cut global supply from May 2020.
